Why does your body sweat?

Sweating is used to regulate the body’s temperature in response to body heat or environmental changes in temperature. Hormone stimulus and emotional responses can also cause the body to sweat. Our bodies contain approximately two to five million sweat glands that are responsible for regulating our body’s temperature. While sweating is the body’s natural response to change in body temperature or in situations where they feel anxious or apprehensive, people with hyperhidrosis sweat an excessive amount without cause.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is an involuntary condition where the sympathetic nervous system causes the body to overproduce sweat. Hyperhidrosis can be a socially isolating condition because patients are embarrassed by their excessive sweating. There are two different types of hyperhidrosis, primary hyperhidrosis and secondary hyperhidrosis. We do not know the exact cause of primary hyperhidrosis, only that it seems to be an inherited trait. Some experts believe it may be a response triggered by emotional stimuli and could be a result of feeling anxious or nervous. Secondary hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating as a result of a disease or other underlying condition, or medication. Alcoholism can also trigger hyperhidrosis. Fortunately, there are a number of medical treatment options than can help reduce the effects of hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis treatment options

  • Oral medication
  • Antiperspirant
  • BOTOX®
  • Surgery

How does BOTOX® treat hyperhidrosis?

The botulinum toxin found in BOTOX® temporarily blocks the chemical signals from the nerves that trigger the sweat glands. Blocking chemical signals from the sweat glands in the treated areas temporarily eliminates the excessive sweating. The effects of BOTOX® injections can last for up to six to eight months. Regular follow-up injection sessions are required in order to maintain the results.
