Hyperhidrosis: What are My Treatment Options?

Hyperhidrosis: What are My Treatment Options?

Hyperhidrosis can be an embarrassing and frustrating condition. This condition affects an estimated two to three percent of the population. Most victims suffer from excessive sweating from the armpits with an onset in late adolescence, while others suffer from excessive sweating from the hands and feet with an average age of onset of around age 13. In addition to being embarrassing, the condition can make it difficult to perform simple tasks like holding a pen or driving. There are, however, treatment options for this condition.

What Causes Hyperhidrosis?

The cause of this condition is unclear. There are no clear triggers for the excessive sweating, and most victims simply sweat for no apparent reason. In most cases, it appears to be inherited, but the causative genes of hyperhidrosis have not been identified yet.

What are the Treatment Options?

The first treatment suggested for sufferers is antiperspirants that contain aluminum chloride hexahydrate, either over-the-counter or prescription-strength. This suggestion works better for underarm sweaters than for hand/foot sweaters. If that does not result in acceptable results, which is common, oral medication can resolve the problem in some people, although these drugs can have side effects.

Regular injections of BOTOX® into the armpits have been found to be quite effective in preventing excessive armpit sweating. This procedure is simple and convenient. However, it needs to be repeated as needed for ongoing results.

Another treatment option involves surgery. This simple procedure targets the sympathetic nerves responsible for triggering sweating. Although it is often effective, it carries some risks.
